작곡가 가브리엘은 어릴적 너무나도 가난하여 농장에서 자랐으며 독학으로 리드오르간을 치며 공부하였다.
16살부터 아이들의 노래도 가르치고 작곡가로도 소문이 나기 시작했다. 34살 때 샌프란시스코 그레이스 감리교회의 음악감독이 되었으며, 46살 때부터 시카고 로드히버 출판사에서 일하기 시작했다.
70여권의 노래책을 편집하였으며, 23편의 칸타타를 출판하였다. 그가 작곡한 곡 중 우리 찬송가에 수록된 곡이 무려 9곡이나 된다.
