2007년 9월14일에 태형/태훈에게 보낸 편지

태형과 태훈에게,

아빠가 중학교 다닐 때 열심히 외우던 (전체는 아니고 몇 개의 좋은 구절들을…) 롱펠로우의 인생 찬가라는 유명한 영시이다.
이제 날이 다르게 커가는, 엄마와 아빠의 사랑하는 두 아들에게 멋지고 강한 남자가 되라고 전해 주고 싶은 시(詩)란다.
오늘 아침 잠든 너희 모습을 보고 가슴이 뭉클해져 일부러 보낸다. 사랑한다.

A PSALM OF LIFE  인생 찬가              

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (롱펠로우 지음.美國)

  - 젊은이의 가슴이 찬양자(시편 저자)에게 말한 것

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
"Life is but an empty dream!"
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

슬픈 가락으로 내게 말하지 말아라.
인생은 한낱(한갓) 헛된 꿈에 불과하다고!
잠자는 영혼은 죽은 것이니
만물은 겉모습 그대로가 아니다.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
And the grave is not its goal;
"Dust thou art, to dust returnest, "
Was not spoken of the soul.

인생은 현실이다! (삶은 실재다!) 인생은 진지하다!
무덤이 그 목적지가 될 수는 없다.
"너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가리라"(창3:19)
이 말은 영혼에 대해 한 말이 아니다.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
Find us farther than to-day.

우리가 가야 할 곳이나 가는 길은
향락도 아니요 슬픔도 아니다.
하루하루 내일이 오늘보다 낫도록
행동하는 그것이 목적이요 길이다.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave.

예술은 길고 세월(인생)은 빨리 흘러간다.
우리 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하나
(그럼에도 불구하고) 싸맨 북소리처럼 둔탁하게
무덤을 향한 장송곡을 치고 있는 것이다.

In the world's broad field of battle,
In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
Be a hero in the strife!

이 세상 넓고 넓은 싸움터에서
인생의 거친 야영장에서
말 못 하고 쫓기는 짐승(소나 양)처럼 되지 말고
싸움에 이기는 영웅이 되라.

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,--act in the living Present!
Heart within, and God o'er head!

아무리 즐거워도 [미래]를 믿지 말라!
죽은 [과거]는 죽은 채로 매장되게 하라!
활동하라,- 살아있는 [현재]에 활동하라
안에는 마음(용기)을 갖고, 위로는 하나님을 모시고.

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing, leave behind us
Footprints, on the sand of time:-

위인들의 생애가 우리를 깨우치느니,
우리도 장엄한 삶을 이룰 수 있고,
우리도 이 세상 떠날 때에는
시간의 모래 위에 자신의 발자취를 남길 수 있으리라. 

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

그 발자취는, 뒷날에 다른 어떤 사람이,
인생의 장엄한 바다(main=ocean)를 건너가다가
파선되어 버려진 어느 형제가
(그 발자취를) 보고 다시금 용기를 되찾게 될 것이니.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing.
Learn to labor and to wait.

자, 이제 우리 모두 일어나 일하자.
어떤 운명인들 이겨낼 용기를 지니고,
끊임없이 성취하고 계속 추구하면서
일하며 기다림을 배우자.
