Kim family history 김씨에 대한 소개

이번 2022년 카타르 월드컵의 한국 팀에는 '정우영'이라는 동명이인인 선수 2명이 동시에 공격수 및 미드필더로서 뛰면서 우리나라 중계방송을 하는 사람들도 '작은 정우영'이라고 길게 발음하는 데 어려움을 겪는 모습을 보았습니다. 심지어 수문장부터 수비수 대부분 즉 총 5명이 '김'씨 성을 가진 선수들이어서 외국 사람들에게는 이야깃거리가 된 것 같습니다. 컬링의 경우는 팀 전체가 '김'씨로만 구성되어서 이름까지 '팀 김'이었지요. 한국에 대해 조금 안다고 하는 외국인들은 '김'씨가 무척 많다는 것을 재미있게 얘기합니다.

이에 대해 외국인들에게 '김'씨에 대해 소개하는 영문을 인터넷을 통해 찾아서, 제 입맛에 맞게 조금 수정했습니다.

Kim Family History

Kim is written '김' in Korean, and the Chinese character '金', meaning ‘gold’. '金' is just a Chinese character for the surname Kim, the most common Korean surname comprising about 21 percent (more than 10 Million people) of the Korean population. According to some sources, there are over 600 (more than 1,000 in the census in 2015) different Kim clans, but only a hundred have been documented. Kims can be found in virtually every part of Korea.

The two largest Kim clans, the Kim family of Kimhae and the Kim family of Kyŏngju are descended from semi-mythological characters who lived two thousand years ago.
According to legend, the Kimhae Kim family founder Kim Suro came in answer to a prayer offered by the nine elders of the ancient Karak Kingdom. In 42 AD, these elders met together to pray for a king. In answer to their prayer, they were sent a golden box containing six golden eggs. From the first egg emerged King Su-ro, Karak's first king. The other five eggs became the five kings of Karak's neighboring kingdom Kaya.
The founder of the Kim family of Kyŏngju Kim, Al-Ji had similar origins. In 65 AD, the king of Shilla T’alhae heard a strange sound from a forest (KyeRim) near the Shilla capital Kyŏngju. On investigation, he found a crowing white rooster standing next to a golden egg. From this egg emerged Al-Ji, founder of the Kyŏngju Kim family and subsequent king of the Shilla Kingdom. Because Al-Ji emerged from a 'golden' egg, King T’alhae bestowed upon the child the surname Kim which means ‘gold’.

It is estimated that about half of the one hundred or so Kim clans of modern Korea are descended from the Kyŏngju Kim clan. (Source: Dictionary of American Family Names 2nd edition, 2022)

 

김 씨는 1,000만 명이 넘어 전체 한국 인구의 약 21% 이상을 차지하고 있습니다. 본관도 2015년 인구조사에 의하면 1,000개를 넘어섭니다. 대한민국의 어느 지역을 가더라도 김 씨가 많이 살고 있습니다.

가장 큰 본관은 김해 김 씨와 경주 김 씨인데 (3위는 광산 김 씨), 김해 김 씨는 가락국의  장로들의 기도 응답으로 발견된 상자에서 나온 금 달걀 중 하나가 김수로 왕이 되었으며 시조입니다. 경주 김 씨는 김알지가 시조로서 역시 석탈해 왕 때 계림에서 발견된 금 달걀이 탄생 설화를 구성합니다. 금 달걀에서 나왔기에 성을 금을 뜻하는 '김金'으로 정했다고 합니다.

수많은 김 씨 본관들은 반 이상이 경주 김 씨로부터 갈라져 나왔습니다. (3위인 광산 김 씨도 경주 김 씨에서 갈라져 나왔습니다.)
