저녁이 없는 평화를 위한 기도….

매일의 야근과 주말 근무 속에 살며 오랜 동안 '저녁이 있는 삶'을 동경했습니다.
집으로 돌아가 오롯이 나로 머무는 그 시간이 곧 존엄이었습니다.

그러나 저녁이 '있다'는 말은, 저녁 또한 결국 '저문다'는 뜻입니다.
위로는 달콤하지만 짧고, 밤이 깊을수록 내일의 그림자는 길어집니다.

성 어거스틴은 '저녁이 없는 평화'를 기도했습니다.
창세기에서 첫째 날부터 여섯째 날까지 '저녁이 되고 아침이 되니'라는 후렴구가 붙었으나,
하나님이 안식하신 일곱째 날에는 그 말이 없습니다. 
우연한 생략이 아닙니다. 하나님의 안식은 잠시 스쳐 가는 휴식이 아니라, 영원히 저물지 않는 현실입니다.

저녁이 있는 삶은 하루의 먼지를 씻어 주는 달콤한 퇴근길입니다.
그러나 저녁이 없는 평화는 주일 밤 눈을 감으며 월요일을 두려워 하지 않는 굳센 마음, 지친 영혼에게 주어진 영원한 주말입니다.

온전히 행복한 삶에는 둘 다 필요합니다.
매일 밤 저녁의 온기로 하루를 씻어 내되, 그 저녁이 저물어도 흔들리지 않도록 우리 영혼 깊은 곳에 믿음의 닻을 내려야 합니다.
오늘 밤, 우리의 저녁이 시원하고 따뜻하기를. 그리고 창밖의 긴 여름 해가 저물지라도, 우리 안의 은혜의 빛만은 끝내 저물지 않기를 기도합니다.

A Prayer for a Peace Without Evening

For the longest time, trapped in a relentless cycle of daily overtime and weekend shifts, I deeply yearned for "a life with an evening." To return home and simply exist as myself—that brief pocket of time felt like the very definition of human dignity.

But to say an evening exists also means it must eventually fade. The comfort it brings is sweet but fleeting; as the night deepens, the shadow of tomorrow grows longer.

The Divine Omission in Genesis

This is why St. Augustine prayed for "a peace without evening."

He found the key to this peace in the creation account of Genesis. For the first six days, the scriptures repeat a rhythmic refrain: "And there was evening, and there was morning." Yet, on the seventh day—the day God rested—those words are nowhere to be found.

This omission is no accident. God's rest is not a temporary pause to catch one's breath; it is an eternal reality that never sets.

A life with an evening is like a sweet commute home, washing away the dust of a grueling day.

A peace without evening, however, is a steadfast heart that closes its eyes on a Sunday night without dreading Monday morning. It is an everlasting weekend granted to a weary soul.

Anchoring the Soul

To live a truly fulfilled life, we need both. We must wash away each day with the transient warmth of our evenings, while anchoring our souls deep in faith so that we remain unshaken even when the darkness falls.

Tonight, I pray that your evening is both cool and comforting. And though the long summer sun outside your window must eventually set, may the light of grace within you never fade.
